How To Choose The Best Vacuum Cleaner

Something to keep in mind when you're buying a new vacuum is that there is no single best vacuum cleaner. There are various designs, sizes and brands and who makes the one that's best suited for you will depend on several factors.

First, you need to determine how you use your vacuum. Do you pull it out all the time, even to clean up small messes? Or do you have a more set schedule when you go through the entire house, using a broom or portable vacuum for the smaller stuff?

There are three main types of vacuum cleaners:

- Upright
- Canister
- Central

Central vacuums are the ones that are built-in, with connection outlets throughout the house. With this type of vacuum, you generally have a hose and a tool (whether a broom, power head or some other type) that you move from outlet to outlet. These models are easier to move around than many canister vacuums, but not always as easy as an upright model.

Canister vacuums have a main container with the hose and tools attached to it. You need to move the entire unit around with you as you vacuum.

Upright models have everything within the one piece, from power head to dust collection, so they are a little easier to move around with you.

Second, what is your budget? Some brands, such as Dyson, are considerably more expensive than others. People will argue whether they are worth the extra money, or if it's just a gimmick to make them seem more exclusive, but you need to consider the price when choosing your vacuum.

And keep in mind that you want it to last for as long as possible. Trying to save money by going with a really inexpensive model can actually wind up costing you more in some cases, if the equipment breaks down sooner and needs to be replaced.

Third, do you have any special needs in your home, such as dust allergies, that might require a particular type of filtering on the vacuum? These kind of extras will add to the cost, but they aren't negotiable if it's a health issue.

Lastly, you want to be sure you can get parts and service if you ever need it. All major brands like Dyson, Kirby, Eureka, Hoover and Miele have warranties on their vacuums, but you should find out how the servicing is handled. If you don't have a local repair center for a particular brand, that might be a reason to consider a different one.
